A business group in Aklan is advocating for a reduction in curfew hours.
Businesses in Aklan are petitioning with the province administration to reduce curfew hours to allow them more working time, which will help them stay afloat in the face of the health crisis.
The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Aklan chapter (PCCI-Aklan), whose membership spans the whole province except for the island of Boracay in the town of Malay, passed a resolution on Monday demanding the curfew hours to be restored to 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.
Due to an increase in coronavirus disease, 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the province, Aklan Governor Florencio Miraflores issued Executive Order No. 3, series of 2022 on January 16, 2022, extending the curfew hours from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., effective January 17, 2022.
According to the resolution, the new EO resulted in reduced working hours, which impacted local entrepreneurs, balut vendors, waiters, and bartenders, among others.
It went on to say that, unlike prior years, it appears that the administration is “not interested in providing assistance to the impacted residents and workers.”
“They must be allowed to work in order to earn a living in order to survive the Covid-19 pandemic,” the resolution declared.
Because they are also afflicted by the epidemic, the business group stated that they could not continue to assist their employees.
“No public documentation has been produced, particularly in Aklan, linking Covid-19 positive cases to restaurants and other eating establishments,” they claimed.
PCCI-Aklan has 46 active members who employ over a thousand people.
The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) reported 1,762 active cases, 12,284 recoveries, and 202 deaths as of January 23.
The province is also on Alert Level 3 according to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases Resolution No. 156-C, series of 2022, which was announced on Jan. 12.
