In Mindanao, President Rodrigo R. Duterte claimed there is still a high level of vaccine apprehension among Muslim groups.

“For the record, the Muslim population in Mindanao is opposing the bakuna (vaccines),” Duterte remarked during his prerecorded Talk to the People, which aired Monday night.

After 100 passengers destined for Zamboanga were delayed at North Harbor Terminal 4 due to the government’s “no vaccination, no ride” policy, Duterte made the statements about low vaccine uptake.

“I’m not sure about them taking—allowing vaccines into their bodies,” he continued, “because I think it’s more of a religious view.” “But, alas, iyan ang tingin ko. Ayaw talaga sa Mindanao. Marami dyan ang (I see it that way.) People in Mindanao are adamant about not doing so. Many of them refuse to be vaccinated for personal reasons.”

Meanwhile, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) have already aided unvaccinated travelers in returning to their respective hometowns.

According to the National Task Force Against Covid-19, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao has the lowest vaccination rate, with only 25.22 percent (769,604) of its 70 percent (3,051,196 total targeted population fully vaccinated and 47,081 receiving booster shots, out of 17 regions nationwide.
