South Korea sets a new record. 13000 fresh Covid-19 cases

For the second day in a row, South Korea recorded a record number of new Covid-19 cases, with over 13,000 infections reported amid the rapid spread of the Omicron variety, according to local media.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency confirmed 13,012 cases in the last 24 hours, up from 8,571 illnesses the day before.

The total number of cases has climbed to 762,983, with 32 more linked deaths bringing the total number of fatalities to 6,620.

Since early last week, daily figures have risen from roughly 3,800 to over 7,500.

Health officials are urging people to stay at home for the Lunar New Year holiday break, which starts this weekend and ends next Wednesday.

According to a senior presidential official, President Moon Jae-in will preside over a Covid-19 reaction meeting.

So far, 85.5 percent of South Korea’s 52 million people have been properly vaccinated. Booster injections were also given to a total of 25.78 million persons.
