Using self-administered Covid-19 test kits eliminates the need for healthcare staff to collect nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs.

The test kits will just require nose samples, according to Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) Laboratory Chief Armando Tandoc III in a televised Laging Handa public briefing.

“Kapag po nasal, galing lamang po ito sa harapan o kaya hanggang gitnang bahagi ng ilong na maaaring kunin sa sarili o kung sa may kapansanan o kung sa mga bata ay maaaring kunin ng isang nakakatanda,” Tandoc remarked.

Some test kits, he added, will require saliva samples.

“So, sa pagsagawa naman po ng test, may mga instruction na susundin kung paanong ilagay iyong sample sa cartridge at kung gaano katagal iyong hihintayin bago magkaroon ng resulta,” he said.

The Department of Health previously stated that it would provide recommendations for the proper use of self-administered or home test kits.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Monday that it had approved two kits: Abbott’s “Panbio Covid-19 Antigen Self-Test,” which will be sold in boxes of 1, 4, 10, and 20 tests, and Labnovation’s “SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Test,” which will be sold in boxes of 2, 5, and 20 tests.

Aside from the two approved kits, the FDA has given the RITM approval for 31 other kits.

Users of the kits, according to Tandoc, “must read and follow carefully” the instructions that come with them.

“Kapag po kasi hindi nasunod ito mula sa pagkolekta sa paggawa ng exam at pag-interpret dito, maaring makaapekto po sa accuracy,” he said.
