PNP advised enforcing health measures at polling activities.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, Interior Secretary Eduardo Ano has directed the Philippine National Police (PNP) and all local government units to ensure that minimum health standards be strictly maintained during political activities.
“While the 2022 election is a significant occasion for the country, we must keep in mind that we are still fighting an adversary who thrives in crowds.” In a statement, Ano stated, “We anticipate the LGUs and the PNP to carefully follow the poll standards.”
One of the Commission on Elections’ partner departments, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, has been responsible for implementing Resolution 10732, which lays out the parameters for conducting political activities in 2022 amid the pandemic.
All physical contact between candidates and the general public is prohibited, including handshakes, high fives, and kisses. Selfies and other activities that necessitate close closeness, such as food and drink distribution, are also prohibited.
In-person campaigns are permitted in Alert Levels 3 and 2, however, candidates must be accompanied by a maximum of five campaign support employees. Candidates are not permitted to enter any private residence and must avoid crowding. All degrees of quarantine allow motorcades.
Meetings, rallies, and other conventions are permitted, subject to the venue’s operational capacity and alert level.
Meanwhile, as the May 9 national and municipal elections approach, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David has urged the public to do more to battle disinformation.
In an article published on the CBCP’s official website, he stated that as the country approaches the May 9 presidential elections, it is everyone’s concern to concentrate on combating misleading information, particularly on social media.
“I hope and pray that more individuals and organizations will join us in this proactive fight against the use of social media for disinformation,” David stated during the launch of #FactsFirstPH, a campaign to promote truth and combat misinformation.
He also stated that the Catholic Church is the country’s ally in the fight against deception.
