Aquarium Care Guide- New Tanks

When you start a new aquarium, it is important to know how nitrogen moves through the plant. Many people who start keeping fish too quickly don’t learn enough about the hobby. Before purchasing fish, the aquarium must be cycled. This could take anywhere from 24 hours to 4 weeks. In an established aquarium, there are certain bacteria that help the breakdown of ammonia to nitrates, but they are not present in a new tank because they are generated from existing fish. If there are no existing fish, then there are no good bacteria.

The main idea of the nitrogen cycle is this. Fish eat food and make waste. It turns into ammonia in the aquarium when that waste and extra food and plant debris are mixed with water and turned into sewage. Ammonia is bad for fish, so it needs to be broken down. That’s why nitrifying bacteria is important. This bacteria turns the ammonia into nitrites which are more tolerable to fish than ammonia. Next, different nitrifying bacteria will turn the nitrites into nitrates, which are even less toxic to the fish and other aquarium life. Filters collect and reduce the number of nitrates in the water. They will eventually build up in the tank. To get rid of the nitrates in the water, you need to change the water often.

Before any fish are put in an aquarium, it is important to set it up and run it. With a lot of water, wash the tank and any substrate or decorations that are in it. Don’t use soap. Fill the tank with water that has been de-chlorinated and add filters and lighting. The water in the tank should be clear and the pH and water temperature should be right.

Now it’s time to buy the fish! Fish like danios, barb, gouramis, and livebearers are hardy, so you can keep them for a long time. They should be able to deal with the high levels of nitrite and ammonia in the new tank. Only add about four fish at a time. Take the fish out of the bag and let them float in the aquarium for about fifteen minutes. Then put them in the fish tank. This will help the fish get used to the temperature of the water in their new home. When you put the fish in, be careful not to let the water from the bag get into the aquarium. A lot of things could be wrong with it. It could be contaminated, or the temperature and pH could be out. Before you feed the fish, give them about two hours to get used to the water.

Only feed what your child can eat in the first two to five minutes of the meal. Do not feed more than that. Overfeeding is a common problem in a fish tank. It is important not to overfeed because extra food will become debris that will raise the level of ammonia in the soil. Even in new aquariums, where there are no bacteria to break down nitrogen, this is very important. It is important to check the water pH every day for the first month of the project. Keep an eye on the tank for cloudiness. If the aquarium becomes cloudy, you may need to add a clarifier to help it clear up. Keep an eye on the fish to see if they are stressed or sick. A fish that is healthy will be swimming all the time. Lethargic fish tend to stay close to the surface of the aquarium. When it’s been a week or so, change about 10% of the water and start doing regular checks.
