Taking care of your aquarium is the most important part of owning an aquarium, but many people don’t think about it. A daily, weekly, and monthly care plan will help you keep your aquarium clean and beautiful, as well as healthy and safe.

Every day, I clean my house.

To keep an aquarium clean, there are a few things that need to be done every day. Make sure the temperature of the tank doesn’t change. Then, you need to make sure it stays the same. To keep tropical freshwater fish happy, the temperature should be around 77 degrees most of the time. There will be more algae in your aquarium if there is too much heat in it. Every day, look for sick or dead fish. If you have a sick fish, you should get it out of the tank right away, or it could hurt the other fish in the tank. Finally, make sure that the pump and filter are working.

Cleaning up on a weekly basis.

The tank needs to be cleaned every week to keep it healthy. At the bottom of the tank, any waste that has accumulated should be cleaned up every week. Using a siphon tube will do this. If water is lost during this process, be sure to replace it and keep the water level in the tank the same. Add chemicals and chlorine to the tank every week to keep the balance the same. At this point, it is best to check the water for ammonia and nitrate. Don’t forget to check the pH of the water as well. You should take care of your live plants every week. If they’re getting too big, cut them back and remove any dead or sick leaves. In your gravel, re-anchor and put in new sprouts to keep them in place. Also, look in your tank for snails. When you put a piece of lettuce in the tank, you can get rid of snails. The snails will be drawn to the lettuce, and you can use a net to get them out.

Every month, I clean my house.

Finally, a few simple steps each month will keep your aquarium clean and healthy. A small amount of water should be changed each month. Remove about 20% to 25% of the water from the tank with a siphon hose. You should always check to make sure that your chemical balance is the way it should be. Death will happen if there are too many chlorine and ammonia. Cleaning the filter should be a monthly task as well as changing the filter cartridge. Be sure not to clean the filter too thoroughly as it contains helpful bacteria that aids in stabilizing the chemical balance in the tank. It’s important to scrape and remove all algae from the surface of the tank when you clean it every month. If you find you are having a significant amount of algae, consider adding an algae eater to the tank. Should you already have one, be sure to keep an eye on the temperature of the tank and you may also want to limit the time in which a light is used. Any increased heat source will speed up the production of algae inside the aquarium.

If your tank is located in direct sunlight and you are having an algae problem, it is best to relocate the tank.

By following a maintenance schedule, you will be sure to keep a clean, clear and healthy tank. Aquarium care is essential and must be performed regularly to ensure the long and happy life of your fish. Provide yourself with an aquarium to be proud of by keeping up with the care and cleaning.
