In Negros Oriental, Covid-19 cases spiral.

In Negros Oriental, the number of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases has risen from 24 in early January to 2,000 by the end of the month.

In a virtual press conference Monday afternoon, Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion said the increase in cases is thought to be caused by the highly-transmissible Omicron form of Covid-19, however, no case of the mutation has yet been proven through genome sequencing.

“Given the features of this latest wave of infections, it’s clear that the Omicron variety is responsible for the virus’s rapid spread,” she remarked in a combination of English and Cebuano.

The province had previously sent 50 specimens to the Philippine Genome Center for genome sequencing, but the results had not been returned to the province, she said.

Estacion believes that the present figures do not accurately reflect the province’s condition, acknowledging that many people infected with Covid-19 but experiencing only mild to moderate symptoms have avoided seeking medical advice and/or reporting to health authorities for verification.

Test results from January 27 to 31 revealed a total of 905 new infections, according to her.

“With only 340 recent recoveries, the number of favorable results outnumbers the number of recoveries this time,” she added.

As of January 31, Negros Oriental had a total caseload of 22,092 cases, with 19,787 recoveries, 1,623 active cases, and 682 fatalities.

People should not assemble since the Omicron spreads faster than the other Covid-19 forms, according to Estacion, and should continue to follow fundamental health precautions.

Negros Oriental is still on Level 3 alert till February 15th.
