Hog farmers in the South Coast are being asked to register with the Department of Agriculture. -RSBSA

The provincial veterinary office in this city has urged livestock farmers to register their hogs with the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA), which will allow them to recover a portion of their investments if their farms are infected with African swine fever (ASF) or other diseases.

The indemnity from the Department of Agriculture (DA) can now be obtained at the local agriculture office, according to Dr. Flora Bigot, head of the provincial veterinary office.

She recommended hog farmers register with the RSBSA and then declare their hogs.

In a statement, Bigot added, “If you want to ensure a grower or fattener, it should be at the age of 45 days to four months old.”

The premium is free for livestock owners with a limit of 20 swine heads, according to Bigot.

Sow pigs between the ages of eight months and four years are also insured, and the premium can be renewed every year at the municipal agriculture office as long as they are registered with the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC).

Hog raisers can collect their insurance if their herd is lost due to diseases, according to Bigot.

“All they have to do is take a photo of the dead pig, receive a barangay certification, and have the provincial veterinary office endorse it,” Bigot added.

As long as they have the paperwork and their livestock is within the contaminated zone, hog breeders can also claim insurance from the PCIC during culling due to an ASF outbreak.

“The PCIC will pay PHP5,000 per head to the producer and PHP14,000 per head to the breeder,” she said.
