Despite a decrease in instances, the alert level system and protocols should be maintained.
Despite a significant decline in Covid-19 instances in the country, an infectious diseases specialist suggested on Thursday that basic public health requirements and the alert level system be maintained.
Dr. Edsel Salvaa, a member of the Department of Health’s (DOH) Technical Advisory Group for Infectious Disease, stated in a Laging Handa briefing that abolishing the alert level system at this time is not “timely,” as a shift to Alert Level 1 would allow the country’s economy to return to “100 percent” capacity while maintaining minimum health protocols.
“Kailangan rin natin ng framework na kung biglang tumaas iyong mga kaso, then mayroon tayong calibrated reaction para hindi tuluy-tuloy iyong paglaganap at mapi-pressure naman po ang ating mga ospital (We need a framework if there is a sudden spike in cases, then we
Despite confidence among the DOH’s Technical Advisory Group’s infectious disease experts due to the continued trend of fewer Covid-19 cases, he warned that the disease should not be “underestimated” to prevent being caught off guard by new varieties.
“Sinabi na ng WHO [World Health Organization], malayo pa ‘yung end noong pandemic ‘no,” says one source. Mayroon pa rin tayong inaasahan na baka may mga lumabas pa na bagong variations (According to the WHO, the pandemic will not be over anytime soon.) Salvaa stated, “We’re still expecting new varieties to come out).”
Other countries that have relaxed health procedures to the point where face masks are no longer required in public should not be mimicked, he said, adding the Philippines should instead take a “care and science-based” approach.
“Hindi po ibig sabihin na dahil mababa ang kaso, tatanggalin na natin lahat itong pagma-mask at pagpi-physical distance dahil alam natin naman nandiyan pa rin naman iyong virus at puwede pa rin siyang umusbong ulit (It doesn’t
He attributes the recent decline in Covid-19 infections to a major section of the population being vaccinated and ongoing adherence to minimum public health standards.
He recommended that people get completely vaccinated and take a booster dose to continue the present decline of Covid-19 cases.
“Tuluy-tuloy naman iyong proteksiyon sa ating vulnerable population ng kahit dalawang doses lang ng bakuna, mas maganda talaga na mayroon tayong third dose lalung-lalo na doon sa ating vulnerable population dahil over time nagkakaroon talaga ng waning ng protection (There is
After 8,702 new cases and 15,290 new recoveries were reported on Thursday, there are now 153,335 active Covid-19 cases in the country, down from 160,297 active cases on Wednesday.
