Residents here greeted vice presidential candidate Sara Duterte on Thursday, not just to demonstrate their support for her candidacy, but also to thank her for the relief assistance they received after Typhoon Odette struck their town in December.

Gigi Parado and her neighbors waved handmade banners reading “Daghang Salamat Inday Sara sa Ayuda sa mga pagkaon, tubig, ug mga sinena (Thank you, Inday Sara, for the relief help such as food, water, and clothing)” as they awaited the arrival of Davao City Mayor Inday Sara.

Typhoon Odette wreaked havoc on the regions of Southern Leyte.

“Karon, naghinay-hinay nami og bangon (We’re slowly getting back on our feet),” Parado remarked.

The city government of Davao City delivered relief materials to survivors of Typhoon Odette, and residents here were among those who got them.

Duterte and her presidential running mate Bongbong Marcos visited typhoon-ravaged districts in the Visayas and Mindanao in December. They brought relief supplies for the survivors.

Dabawenyos who choose to have their “Pahalipay sa Pasko,” a little gift from the municipal government, donated to storm victims in the Visayas and Mindanao have also received food packs from Davao City.

Duterte visited the islands of Siargao and Dinagat last month to deliver more aid and housing materials to people who had been displaced. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with the AGIMAT Party-list.

The Visayas leg of Duterte’s “Mahalin Natin ang Pilipinas Ride” began Thursday morning in Liloan, Southern Leyte, formally kicking off the 28-day caravan that would culminate in Cotabato City before returning to Davao City at the end of February.

She met with Vice Governor Christopherson Yap and 18 Southern Leyte town mayors upon her arrival at Liloan town.

Sara made multiple pit stops along the way to thank her supporters.

The trip will culminate on the third day in Tacloban City.
