The White House announced on Friday that President Joe Biden has chosen career diplomat MaryKay Loss Carlson to be the new US ambassador to the Philippines.

Since Sung Kim’s four-year tour of duty in Manila concluded in October 2020, the position had been vacant for more than a year.

Since September last year, Heather Variava has served as ad interim Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) at the US Embassy in Manila, succeeding John Law.

In the absence of an ambassador, the CDA serves as the embassy’s official representative.

Carlson is now the US Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

She formerly served as the Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi, India, for three years and as an ad interim CDA for ten months, as well as the Secretary of State’s senior Deputy Executive Secretary in Washington, D.C.

She has worked as a foreign service officer since 1985, after graduating from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and International Studies and a master’s degree in International Relations from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

She also worked in China, Ukraine, Hong Kong, Mozambique, Kenya, and the Dominican Republic as a diplomat.

“The most important lesson I learned is that each applicant must be treated with respect,” Carlson stated in a 2019 interview with the Rhodes College website. “Consular officers are the face of the United States, and how we treat visa applicants, even those who do not meet the requirements, matters.”
