On Saturday, Pope Francis reminded journalists and officials that democracy is being eroded around the world.

At his welcome ceremony at the Greek Presidential Mansion, the pope remarked, “We cannot avoid noting with concern how nowadays, and not only in Europe, we are experiencing a retreat from democracy.”

The pope described migration as a “horrendous modern Odyssey” meant to attract attention to Europe’s refugee situation.

“Europe continues to pause, and the EU (European Union) has frequently succumbed to forms of nationalistic self-interest, rather than serving as a catalyst for solidarity, and has appeared at times obstructed and uncoordinated,” he said.

The pope said democracy is complicated, but it requires greater participation, and he warned against populism’s appealing quick solutions, saying democracy will be the antidote to authoritarianism.

Pope Francis was greeted by Greek President Kateina Sakellaropoulou, who complimented him for his social awareness and support.

“I greet you with great pride and emotion,” she said, adding that Francis’ visit had symbolic significance because it demonstrates his concern for the region.

Francis advocated for the return of the common good in politics, citing various Greek thinkers, and warned against politicians who had “an obsessive pursuit for popularity, and false promises.”

He was welcomed by Sakellaropoulou, who extended the invitation, and met Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Dendias, the Vatican envoy, and Greek Catholic Church authorities at the airport.

For the second time since 2016, the Pope is due to visit Lesvos Island and its reception centers.
