The Department of Agriculture (DA) has released an atlas to assist farmers with corn production.
The Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM) launched the Atlas of Soil-based Agricultural Guide Maps for Corn on Tuesday, fulfilling President Rodrigo Duterte’s promise to improve lives of farmers.
The Soil Health Assessment – National Soil Sampling and Testing project brought together DA-Regional Field Offices, local government units, and farmers to create the atlas.
“We hope that the critical knowledge contained in this atlas will assist our farmers in making better decisions about agricultural productivity and soil health restoration.” We also hope that it will be used to enhance decision-making and the enactment of site-appropriate and client-beneficial policies. “As a result, we encourage the atlas’ receivers to continue to discuss and transmit the findings to all stakeholders,” the agency said in a statement.
According to the DA-BSWM, the atlas’ goal is to give science-based knowledge to support the long-term usage and management of soils while also increasing agricultural output.
“This is critical for the DA-BSWM to continue growing and strengthening our country’s soil knowledge, and to contribute to the DA’s dual goals of masaganang ani, mataas na kita (greater productivity, higher income),” the agency noted.
Since President Duterte gave the go-ahead in 2016, the DA-BSWM has issued seven other significant agricultural publications.
The President stated in his first State of the Nation Address that attempts to combat soil deterioration and promote sustainable soil management have been irregular, small-scale, and primarily driven locally.
According to DA-BSWM, a National-led campaign reinforcing soil as one of the primary cornerstones of sustainable food production was only reintroduced in 2016.
Duterte pledged to conduct nationwide soil testing and emphasized the importance of soil rehabilitation and long-term fertilizing in order to maximize output.
The DA commissioned the BSWM to lead the task of implementing the President’s commitment by developing new soil-based agricultural guide maps, which were then led by Manny Piol.
“By giving information on soil nutrient levels and fertilizer guidelines, these maps can serve as an extra planning and decision-support tool to optimize crop productivity.” Dr. William Dar, the current DA Secretary, restated this commitment as part of efforts to “intensify soil rejuvenation program to sustain higher crop output,” according to the DA-BSWM.
