Even if the water level at Magat Dam in northern Luzon continues to drop, the facility may still be able to supply water in January 2022.

According to Sonia Serrano of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the water level in the dam could rise slightly past its 193-meter average high or spilling level by the end of the year.

“With the surge in Magat’s water, this dam will be able to supply in January,” she stated.

PAGASA predicts near-normal rainfall across the watershed where Magat Dam is located in December. Rainfall of this magnitude can significantly raise the water level in the dam.

According to PAGASA, the water level in Magat at 6 a.m. on Tuesday was 180.39 meters, or 0.40 meters lower than it was 24 hours earlier. The water level at Magat at 6 a.m. was also 12.61 meters lower than its typical peak.

However, PAGASA estimates that by the end of the year, the water level in the Magat watershed will have risen to 194.51 meters, with 221 millimeters of rain expected this month and a water allocation of 152.55 cubic meters per second in the area.
