Executives are hopeful about the future of ‘Build, Build, Build.’
After considering the project’s long-term economic impact, authorities are optimistic that most infrastructure projects suggested under the government’s “Build, Build, Build” initiative will be implemented.
Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said 18 of the 112 infrastructure flagship projects (IFPs) would be completed by June this year, or by the end of the Duterte administration, in a virtual briefing hosted by the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) on Tuesday.
He claims that 12 more projects would be completed by the end of 2022 and that 89 more will be implemented by 2023 and completed within the next six years.
These projects are estimated to cost PHP6.65 trillion with a PHP3.12 trillion investment required.
He believes that the next administration will continue to complete the remaining projects since “the majority of these projects have been appropriately assessed by the NEDA-ICC (National Economic and Development Authority-Investment Coordination Committee) Board and have gone through a procedure.”
“And the vast majority of these actually produce a high-impact economic study.” “The national benefit is enormous,” he remarked.
“There’s no way the next administration will scrap most of these projects,” Sadain added, “but they may look at it and reconsider it.”
“We’ve also seen that the viability of implementing these projects is extremely high due to the significant economic impact they will have on the country.” “We believe that the next administration will be able to maintain these,” he said.
The Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge, the Panglao-Tagbilaran City Offshore Connector, Guicam Bridge, 3 Tawi-Tawi Bridges, the Panay-Guimaras-Negros Link Bridge, Cebu-Mactan Bridge and Coastal [Road Construction], Panguil Bay Bridge, and the Samal Island-Davao City Connector are among the major inter-island projects under the Build, Build, Build
The North Commuter Railway and Metro Manila Subway are “very important” projects for the Department of Transportation, he said.
He also referenced the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System’s Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project, as well as the Jalaur River Multipurpose Project Stage 2.
NEDA Undersecretary Roderick M. Planta stated at the same event that the current NEDA-ICC-approved IFPs are based on the primary idea “that the benefits outweigh the expense.”
“As a result, we believe we can make a case for the future administration to recognize the value in continuing its implementation,” he said.
He also urged the future administration to continue with infrastructure development because of the country’s significant shortfall.
