Taal Volcano has a phreatomagmatic burst.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported a phreatomagmatic burst within Taal Volcano’s main crater on Thursday night.
The interaction of magma and water causes phreatomagmatic eruptions. Multiple explosive episodes, spaced at varying intervals, are typical of eruptions.
The eruption occurred at 4:16 p.m. on Thursday and lasted 27 seconds. It ejected a 300-meter-high white plume.
According to Phivolcs, no eruption ensued.
Phivolcs stated in the Taal Volcano report issued at 8 a.m. that no volcanic earthquakes had been registered in the previous 24 hours.
The lake’s upwelling of hot volcanic fluids produced 1,000-meter-high plumes that drifted southwest.
Furthermore, on February 8, sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions averaged 8,686 tons.
Taal Volcano is still on alert level 2 (increasing unrest), which implies that abrupt steam or gas-driven explosions, volcanic quakes, light ashfall, and fatal volcanic gas expulsions could occur, posing a threat to areas within and near the Taal Volcano Island (TVI).
It must be strongly forbidden to enter TVI, Taal’s permanent danger zone.
In the event of additional violence, Phivolcs advised local government officials to examine and reinforce the preparation of previously evacuated barangays around Taal Lake.
