Angat supplies are adequate during the dry cropping season on farmlands.
MANILA, Philippines — The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) said on Tuesday that the water level in Angat Dam should be sufficient to supply farmlands throughout the dry cropping season.
Since early January 2022, there has been a seven-meter drop, with 195.85 meters recorded as of Tuesday.
The critical level begins at 160 meters, while the standard high level is 212 meters.
“We are approaching harvest season, so the farmlands will demand less water each month,” said C’zar Sulaik, NIA’s Deputy Administrator for Engineering and Operations, during a news briefing on Tuesday.
Other mitigation strategies for the dry season, which typically lasts until June, have already been addressed with the National Water Resources Board, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, and water concessionaires Manila Water and Maynilad Water, according to Sulaik.
“During the dry season, farmers in Bulacan and Pampanga have already gotten high-quality shallow tube well pumps to assist them in tapping other water sources,” he said.
The Angat Dam near Norzagaray, Bulacan, is Metro Manila’s principal supply of drinking water. It also serves provinces in the area.
For a long time, Sulaik noted, NIA has not asked an increase in payment from farmers for its irrigation services.
Farmers with landholdings of eight hectares or less are exempt from paying the irrigation service fee (ISF) for water derived from national and communal irrigation systems constructed and administered by NIA and other government agencies, according to Republic Act 10969, or the Irrigation Service Act, signed in 2018.
Farmers with landholdings of more than eight hectares, including corporate farms, plantations, fish ponds, and those that use irrigation water and facilities for non-agricultural purposes such as drainage, must continue to pay the comparable ISF.
Farmers must be listed in the NIA-created and controlled Farmers Registry in order to be exempted.
Those who aren’t included can ask for their names to be added if they provide proof.
