MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) 7 (Central Visayas) has given a PHP500,000 livelihood grant to the underprivileged communities of Biliran.

In a taped report aired on Friday afternoon, Secretary Fortunato de la Pea said, “The fund is designed to promote the town’s livelihood development, food sufficiency, and nutrition programs under the DOST’s Community Empowerment via Science and Technology Program.”

On February 9, the money was handed over to the local administration of Naval, Biliran.

The Biliran Province State University will give supplies and materials worth PHP100,000 as part of the project, while the local government would provide PHP650,000 for the facility, maintenance, and other running costs.

Members of the San Pablo Farmers Association, according to De la Pea, would gain from this.

Meanwhile, he explained that the DOST’s “Science and Technology-Based Intervention to the Marginalized People of Biliran Province” project contains three components that will help the communities become more empowered.

The usage of STAR BOOKS (Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station) as a science and technology-based information resource for the livelihood and training center of the local government unit is one of them.

STAR BOOKS is a digital library that can be accessed even if you don’t have a connection to the Internet.

The other components, according to him, are technology assistance for mushroom production company development and mushroom preservation product development for food sufficiency and nutrition.
