In distant Ilocos communities, a ‘School on Wheels’ is ready to move.

CITY OF LAOAG – A “School on Wheels” equipped with laptops, printers, and an internet connection will soon be going around distant communities in Ilocos Norte to reach out to students enrolled in the Department of Education’s current distance learning program.

Ilocos Norte’s first mobile school, reportedly valued at PHP 1.9 million, was donated by the first Gen-owned Energy Development Corporation (EDC).

EDC, the country’s largest renewable energy generator, owns a 680-hectare wind farm in this province’s Burgos municipality.

Valerie Talamayan, senior education program expert and acting information officer of the Ilocos Norte Schools Division, said Tuesday that the school on wheels will be rolled out in hard-to-reach communities of Nueva Era, Carasi, and Vintar where internet connectivity is still a problem.

“At the moment, the office is planning and arranging the schedule for the school on wheels,” Talamayan added.

According to Deborah Melchor, head of the EDC’s Corporate Social Responsibility program, the company takes delight in assisting Ilocos Norte students in realizing their aspirations through mobile learning, which is now part of the new standard education program.

“This is in support of the Ilocos Norte Provincial Government’s and the Department of Education’s goal of delivering school to distant communities,” she said.

Beginning February 21, 77 public schools in the Ilocos Region have joined the expanded restricted face-to-face (F2F) sessions. The schools join the 20 that participated in a restricted F2F pilot in the region in November 2021.
