MANILA, Philippines — On Wednesday, the Archbishop of Manila asked voters to scrutinize the character of the candidates they will vote for in the May 9 elections.

Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula said it’s critical for the country’s approximately 60 million voters to be wise in choosing excellent leaders for the sake of society, especially considering the country’s many issues.

“As we prepare for the upcoming elections, I encourage everyone to engage in a process of discernment that will lead to a collective active response.” “This implies immersing ourselves in our socio-political realities and responding pro-actively in light of the principles of Catholic Social Teachings,” he said in an interview on the Church’s Veritas radio station.

Advincula went on to say that Pope Francis’ appeal for ‘better politics,’ which focuses on the well-being of all citizens, is an excellent basis for national discernment in choosing the country’s leader.

He believes that a candidate’s determination to serve the people faithfully will result in actual change, leading to a more successful and pleasant city.

“May our love for our country be an authentic representation of our discipleship in Christ during this pivotal moment in our nation’s history,” Advincula continued.

He stated that he will continue to pray for the people, with the help of the Holy Spirit, for the election of the proper leaders who will promote the people’s benefit.

“We are especially praying for our people as we elect our new leaders in May.” We implore our fellow Filipinos to be’maka-Diyos kaya makabayan,’ (God-fearing and patriotic), to think carefully about their choices, and to favor leaders who exemplify and promote the Kingdom of God’s principles,” the archbishop continued.
