The Edsa revolution left a legacy of peaceful transformation, according to the DILG chief.
MANILA, Philippines — The historic Edsa People Power Revolution left a legacy of peaceful transformation, according to Secretary Eduardo Año of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
“Well, ang Edsa (revolution) kasi is about creating changes in a peaceful manner. So yun yung maganda doon yun yung maganda doon yun yung maganda do If there is unity among us Filipinos, ang isang malaking problema (What is good about Edsa is that an) issue, conflict, na-resolve (was resolved) through peaceful means “In an interview on the sidelines of the 36th anniversary commemoration of the event at the Edsa People Power Monument in Quezon City, Año said.
Along with Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and National Historical Commission of the Philippines and Edsa People Power Commission chair Rene Escalante, Año led the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony.
“So yun ang magandang (so that is the good) lesson doon (about Edsa), and (we should) possibly leverage that experience in resolving future conflicts and challenges in the country,” continued the DILG chief.
Victory over adversity
Meanwhile, Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, a vice presidential candidate, claimed the Edsa revolution was the country’s greatest triumph over adversity.
“It serves as a continual reminder of how the Filipino people stood up to those who caused them pain under Martial Law. History is what it is. It has already occurred. How can we possibly forget?” Added he.
Meanwhile, Sotto advised Filipinos against historical revisionism.
“We must not allow anyone to rewrite history, particularly the history of Edsa. It is the flame that stokes the embers of Filipino nationalism. It’s our emblem of bravery and unity, a beacon of truth that gives us a sense of liberation “Added he.
Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr., the chief of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), announced that a total of 5,345 police officers were deployed to secure the event.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Joint Task Force-National Capital Region, Bureau of Fire Protection, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Department of Public Order and Safety; and Task Force for Transport and Traffic Management will provide additional manpower to the NCRPO.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Edsa 2022: Pagtutulungan Tungo sa Sama-Samang Pagbangon Mula sa Pandemya.”
The revolution marked the end of the late former President Ferdinand Marcos’ 21-year dictatorship and the return of democracy to the Philippines.
