Jose Cardinal Advincula, the Archbishop of Manila, exhorted the faithful to pray for peace, which he claimed could only come from God.

The cardinal said prayer is the most important act of peace-building during his sermon at the Manila Cathedral on Friday during the New Year’s Eve Mass of the Solemnity of Mary.

“Peace cannot be achieved solely via human achievement,” he asserted. “We require God’s serenity, which this world cannot provide.”

Advincula further stated that the Catholic Church stands with victims of the coronavirus disease pandemic of 2019 (Covid-19), Typhoon Odette, and global armed conflicts.

“We remain in solidarity with people who are still suffering as a result of the pandemic and those who have been severely impacted by Typhoon Odette, as well as victims of violence and armed conflicts in Myanmar and around the world.” He said, “We beg the Lord for the favor of peace.”

According to the Department of the Interior and Local Government, “Odette” affected over 4.2 million people, with 570,000 of them sheltering in 1,179 evacuation centers across six regions, 14 provinces, and 222 cities and municipalities as of December 28.

Meanwhile, the UN claimed in a report released on December 31 that the situation in Myanmar has deteriorated since the military assumed control in early 2021.

“By 2022, the turbulence is expected to have pushed nearly half of the population into poverty, wiping off the substantial advances gained since 2005. The crucial threshold for acute malnutrition is now predicted to be reached in 14 of the 15 states and regions. According to the analysis, 14.4 million individuals, or about a quarter of the population, will require assistance in some manner by 2022. 6.9 million men, 7.5 million women, and five million children make up the total “According to the UN study.

“Peace or shalom does not merely mean serenity or the absence of strife,” Advincula explained.

“Rather, it refers to complete well-being, the sum total of life’s rewards. Ang ganap na kabutihan at kaunlaran ng buong tao at ng lahat ng tao ay ang tunay na kapayapaan (True peace is absolute goodness and prosperity of all and for all). The Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, brings us the true peace that the world cannot provide. He also encourages us to play a role in bringing about such peace. He continued, “We look to Mary as our model peacemaker because she teaches us three spiritual virtues: welcome, caring, and praying.”
