Impose basic health protocols across the board in all modes of transportation: DOTr
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has mandated the application of health protocols in all modes of transportation in the wake of a recent surge in Covid-19 cases.
The safety of passengers is always essential, according to DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade.
Tugade said in a news release on Saturday that “we must ensure that health regulations are carefully observed in all public transportation vehicles and in all transportation facilities.”
Tugade’s call came just two days before Metro Manila is placed on Level 3 alert from January 3 to 15.
As of December 31, 14 cases of the Omicron variant had been confirmed.
Intrazonal and interzonal movement are still permitted under Alert Level 3, but local government units may apply reasonable limits.
Tugade ordered enforcers from the Land Transportation Office, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and train marshals from all railway lines to ensure that proper physical distancing is observed inside public transportation vehicles and terminals as part of the implementation of health protocols.
Commuters entering terminals and boarding public transportation must also wear face masks, according to enforcers and marshals.
It should also be illegal for commuters to converse or eat inside trains.
“Don’t get too comfortable. Because the virus is still present, Tugade advised, “let us make it a habit to wear face masks, especially when using public transportation.”
Operators of public transportation must also verify that their vehicles are safe and adequately disinfected.
Tugade warned passengers to be watchful against individuals who will be breaking protocols because enforcers and transit marshals cannot be on the lookout all of the time.
“We’ll need everyone’s help. We can’t do it on our own. Let us, as passengers, drivers, and operators, assist one another. He advised, “Be responsible and disciplined.”
Tugade said officials in the aviation industry should reconsider the present daily passenger arrivals cap in major gateways in coordination with relevant agencies.
