MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) received one of two 97-meter multi-role response vessels (MRRVs) in Port Area, Manila, on Saturday.
According to a news release, the MRRV-9701 has a maximum speed of not less than 24 knots, a range of not less than 4,000 nautical miles, and is capable of conducting persistent maritime patrols.
The MRRVs are based on the Kunigami-class vessels of the Japanese Coast Guard and will be used to support the PCG Task Force Pagsasanay (Exercises), which simulates anti-terrorism and anti-piracy operations.
The vessels were purchased as part of the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project Phase II, which was supported by a Japan International Cooperation Agency Official Development Assistance loan.
Vice Admiral Narciso Vingson Jr., DOTr Assistant Secretary for Maritime, and Vice Admiral Eduardo Fabricante, PCG Officer-in-Charge, led officers and personnel in welcoming the ship.
