In Agusan Norte, a Philippine tarsier was released back into the wild.
BUTUAN CITY, PHILIPPINES โ A Philippine tarsier (Carlito syrichta) identified and rescued by a concerned citizen in the municipality of Las Nieves in Agusan del Norte province has been returned to its natural environment by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Nasipit.
The CENRO-Nasipit claimed the released tarsier is 36.5 cm long in a statement posted Wednesday.
“The tarsier was turned over to our office by Mr. Edward M. Ruiz, a resident of Barangay Matabao, Buenavista, Agusan del Norte. “On February 22, 2022, he rescued wildlife at Purok 22, Sitio New Cana-an, Barangay Lawan-lawan in Las Nieves town,” according to the CENRO-Nasipit.
The tarsier was in good physical condition when released Monday in Barangay Bokbokon, Las Nieves, according to the agency.
The Philippine tarsier is listed as a threatened species in Administrative Order No. 2019-09, or the Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna and Their Categories.
There are 5,000 to 10,000 tarsiers left in the country, according to the International Primate Protection League, but their numbers are dwindling as the wildlife faces multiple threats to its survival, including low birth rates, exploitative tourism, and habitat degradation from extractive activities like logging and mining.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species classifies the Philippine tarsier as “near threatened.”
