Antique SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA. Tourists are now allowed to visit the Sibalom Natural Park (SNP), which is about 12 kilometers from the municipality of Sibalom’s town center.

In an interview on Friday, SNP Protected Area supervisor Anthony Evangelio noted that once it was declared a natural park by Republic Act 11038 in 2018, various activities were forbidden.

The natural park, which is currently home to endangered and indigenous plant and animal species, is situated on 6,778.44 hectares in Barangay Imparayan’s Mt. Porras. Beginning March 1, 2022, it will be open to the public as a tourism attraction.

“Tourists would be able to witness the world’s largest flower, the Rafflesia, which is currently in bloom at the SNP,” he explained.

When fully bloomed, the uncommon reddish-orange Rafflesia speciosa can reach a diameter of 56 centimeters (22 inches) and is regarded as the world’s largest flower.

It was discovered growing inside the SNP in 2000 by Antique Outdoors, an organization of conservationists in the province.

Dr. Julie Barcelona, a botanist at the Philippine National Herbarium of the National Museum of the Philippines in Manila and a native of Sibalom, named the flower Rafflesia speciosa.

The Visayan Warty Pig, Visayan Tarictic Hornbill, and Visayan Spotted Deer thrive in the area because of the natural vegetation.

“In the area, huge century-old trees like the Laua-an species had been maintained,” he explained.

Currently, 80 Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bantay Gubat staff patrol the area to aid in the conservation and protection of the species.

They will also serve as tour guides, ensuring that visitors can only see rare flowers and endangered species within defined zones.

Tourists from the Philippines will be charged PHP30 for adults, PHP15 for students, and PHP100 for foreigners who want to enjoy the SNP’s exhilarating adventure and unique experience.

Picnic tables, gazebos, and cottages are also available in the area for families and small groups who want to have meetings or stay overnight.
