MANILA, Philippines — Since September 2016, the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) has approved PHP807.83 billion in projects.

PEZA director-general Charito Plaza said in a statement on Friday that during the Duterte administration, 88 special economic zones (SEZ) were registered.

These figures contributed to the investment promotion agency’s overall investment approvals totaling PHP4.04 trillion since its foundation in 1995, with a total of 415 SEZs around the country.

To now, PEZA has 4,665 locators. More than 1.78 million jobs were created within the economic zones.

“With the national elections just around the doorstep, PEZA’s objective is beyond politics, and we continue to put our best foot forward so that the best of the Philippines and our fellow kababayans can be shown,” Plaza added.

PEZA’s expansion has been aided by new ecozone models, according to Plaza.

PEZA has developed new ecozones in the last six years, including an agroforestry ecozone, an aquamarine park, a defense-industrial complex, a halal center, an island city ecozone, and a KIST Park for knowledge, innovation, science, and technology.

“PEZA has come a long way,” Plaza remarked, “but there is still much more to do and achieve.”
