In 2021, PH expects record-high FDI inflows of $10.5 billion
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines received USD10.52 billion in net foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows in 2021, up 54.2 percent from USD6.82 billion the previous year, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Thursday.
FDIs continued to grow last year, despite two severe lockdowns in the first and second semesters owing to an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
The BSP said in a statement that the increase in FDI reflected “positive foreign investor opinion on the country amid anticipation of a rebound in domestic economic activity and falling Covid-19 reported cases, as well as the improvement of the global economy.”
The USD10.3 billion net FDIs in 2021 topped the USD10.3 billion net FDIs in 2017.
According to the central bank, FDI net inflows increased last year due to an increase of 80.4 percent in net debt investments to USD7.5 billion from USD2.4 billion in 2020.
Last year, reinvestment of earnings increased by 34.7 percent to USD1.3 billion, up from USD944 million in 2020.
Other than reinvestment of earnings, net investments in equity capital increased by 0.7 percent to USD1.72 billion in 2021, up from USD1.71 billion the previous year.
Singapore, Japan, the United States, and the Netherlands were the top sources of equity capital placements last year, with the majority of investments going into the manufacturing, electricity, gas, steam, and air-conditioning, financial and insurance, and real estate sectors.
FDI net inflows increased by 59 percent to USD1.1 billion in December 2021, compared to USD671 million in the same month in 2020.
