Isko supports the postponing of the barangay and SK elections.
MANILA โ Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso, the presidential candidate of Aksyon Demokratiko, supports the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections scheduled for December 5 this year.
On Thursday, during a visit to Cabiao, Nueva Ecija, Domagoso noted that the SK and Barangay elections are only seven months after the national elections in May and that conducting elections is costly for the country.
Instead of holding another election, he argued, the funds set aside for the December local elections may be used to provide relief to millions of Filipinos.
“This year’s barangay elections are huwag na munang ituloy. Let’s postpone the barangay elections this year because of the national elections in May. In May, national elections were held, followed by a December election for barangay authorities. In these difficult times, it is preferable to use the allocated funds for ‘ayuda’ and other essential needs of the people,” he stated.
Davao Oriental Rep. Joel Almario submitted House Bill 10425 in the House of Representatives in November last year, aiming to postpone Dec. 5, 2022, to May 6, 2024.
For the barangay and SK elections this year, the national government has set aside PHP8 billion from the national budget.
President Rodrigo Duterte had previously signed Republic Act 11462, which postponed the barangay and SK elections from May 2020 to December 2022.
Following the December 2022 election, village elections will be held on the first Monday in December 2025, and every three years thereafter, according to the law.
Local elections, according to Domagoso, should be postponed for a year or perhaps a year and a half after the national elections.
“Yung perang gagamitin natin sa eleksyon, magamit natin para ipang-ayuda sa tao, katulad nung gasolina, or ipang-ayuda sa pagkain, or ipambili natin ng fertilizer at ipamahagi sa magsasaka,” he said.
Domagoso also urged the country’s economic leaders to find measures to bring urgent relief to the people, citing the country’s ongoing economic crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“Our economic managers should approach these issues with the same ‘malasakit’ (care) that President Duterte has demonstrated in his five years as the country’s leader,” he said.
