MANILA, Philippines — According to an official of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), the Ilocos Region has been proclaimed insurgency-free after government soldiers defeated a substantial number of New People’s Army (NPA) guerilla fronts.

National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. claimed 34 members of the Komiteng Larangan Guerilla (KLG) South Ilocos, including two secretaries, were neutralized in a video interview broadcast on NTF-Facebook ELCAC’s page on Monday.

On February 18, government troops captured KLG’s former chairwoman and a member of the NPA Ilocos-Cordillera regional committee in Samar.

“Wala na talagang NPA doon sa Ilocos, except kung nagpapanggap na nag-lie low namin, but ‘yung apat na natitira pa sa Ilocos Sur ay tumakbo doon sa Abra at hinahabol-habol namin,” Esperon said.

He expects the Ilocos Region’s villages to have greater opportunities to prosper.

“Really, development is quickly coming in, of course, ever since it was,” he continued, “but what’s more now, that’s the effect if guerrilla fronts are lessened.”

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing, the NPA, have been disrupting the tourism economy in the region, according to NTF-ELCAC and Presidential Communications Undersecretary Lorraine Badoy.

She stated in a statement that areas designated as tranquil and secure may make additional progress, such as embracing significant players in the tourism industry and providing other commercial prospects.

The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines have all designated the CPP-NPA as a terrorist organization.

The National Democratic Front was officially legally labeled as a terrorist organization by the Anti-Terrorism Council on June 23, 2021, identifying it as “an integral and inseparable part” of the CPP-NPA, which was founded in April 1973.
