MANILA – According to three former NPA rebels, the Gabriela Women’s Party, a party-list group professing to be an advocate for women’s rights, is a recruiter for the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF).

Arian Jane Ramos alias Ka Marikit revealed she was recruited to join the communist movement by Gabriela when she was still a young student during a special press briefing hosted by the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) on Tuesday in honor of International Women’s Month.

Ramos was the former secretary of the NPA Guerrilla Front (GF) 55, the former chairwoman of Gabriela Youth – University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao, and the former secretary of the NPA Guerrilla Front (GF) 55, Sub-Regional Committee 5 (SRC)-Southern Mindanao Regional Command (SMRC).

“I was recruited to UP Mindanao in 2012 because of the many pertinent political and social topics they injected in their propaganda to students like us.” I became a member of the Gabriela Youth and quickly became its chairperson. Then I was indoctrinated as a member of the CPP-NPA-NDF party, tasked with exposing difficulties concerning women in communities. “I was in Talaingod teaching the IPs (Indigenous People) on May 11, 2014,” Ramos remarked.

Ramos became aware of Gabriela’s leadership as a member of the CPP-NPA-NDF during her time in Talaingod.

“I should be aware.” Gabriela’s general assembly was something I used to go to. And I’m sure the women on the legal front lines have it better than us, the mountain women. “Only women are used by Gabriela to raise donations through solicitations from international organizations,” she explained.

Ramos also revealed that it was at this time that she became pregnant by a comrade and gave birth to a child.

“After giving delivery, you are given a month to recover before returning to your mountain unit. “Yun ang mahirap dahil kahit babae ka, ini-expect na kaya mong gawin lahat (It’s difficult because you’re supposed to be able to do everything even though you’re a woman),” Ramos remarked.

She stated that there are several untold cases of female cadres being sexually mistreated and raped by their leaders.

Another former rebel, Ka Ruffa Correa, said that her family was misled into joining the NPA.

She, too, spoke about her experiences as a member of the NPA, including how the communist terrorist group (CTG) decimated her family.

Correa stated she followed her father’s recommendation to join the CTG through Anakbayan in order to get a good education and became pregnant by her live-in lover.

Correa claimed she gave birth in a near-death circumstance because she and her younger sister “Shane” were left to fend for themselves as they traveled down the slopes to the hospital.

She went on to say that when her commanders ordered her to return to the mountains, she was forced to leave her infant with individuals she didn’t know.

While she was backed up, she was devastated to learn that her younger sister Shane had been raped twice by her commander and their platoon leader when she was just 15 years old, causing them to file complaints with the movement’s own tribunal, but to no avail.

They subsequently made the decision to flee the CTGs by handing themselves up to government forces. Pacita Correa, their cataract-stricken mother, also gave herself in.

Pacita said she only learned of her children’s horrific ordeal with the CTGs when she saw them again under the protection of government troops.

She appealed with her husband and two boys to surrender as well at the press conference.

Shane is currently in the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the Department of Justice has already filed rape accusations against her commanders, Paterno Opo alias Dodong and Rey Dela Pea.

Mary Frances Meriveles, a mother and member of the Hands Off Our Children Movement, could not accept that her son, Francis Ern Meriveles, never returned home after joining the NPA while still a 16-year-old student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

“Francis turned 23 on March 13 last year.” Siya pa rin wala pa rin wala pa rin wala pa r Hirap ang hirap. May takot na ako if ibabalik siya sa amin… Patay na siya, ay patay na siya. Ito ay di kwento gawa-gawang. He’s still gone, sana mamulat na tayo sa katotohanan (He’s still gone, sana mamulat na tayo sa katotohanan). It’s a challenge. I’m scared that if he’s brought to us, he’ll already be dead. It is not a partisan narrative. Hopefully, we will become aware of the truth),” Meriveles remarked, alluding to parents and children duped into joining the CPP-NPA-NDF through fronts such as Gabriela and Anakbayan.

The United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines have all designated the CPP-NPA as a terrorist group.

The NDF was officially legally labeled as a terrorist group by the Anti-Terrorism Council on June 23, 2021, identifying it as “an integral and inseparable member” of the CPP-NPA, which was established in April 1973.
