‘Uncertain’ whether PRRD supports PDP-endorsement Laban’s of Marcos’ presidential bid
MANILA – Malacanang is unsure whether President Rodrigo Roa Duterte supports his ruling party, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), decision to endorse presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s candidacy.
This follows Monday’s adoption of a resolution by the PDP-Laban formally endorsing Marcos’ presidential bid.
In its resolution, the PDP-Laban stated that it decided to support Marcos following “careful and exhaustive” deliberations by its national executive committee.
It added that it chose Marcos to “promote ‘Unity for Sustainability’ of socioeconomic development and national progress” because he is “the candidate whose vision of governance is most consistent with the PDP-11-point Laban’s agenda.”
Despite this, acting Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar stated that Duterte has yet to make a formal announcement regarding his preferred successor.
“Like any political party, the PDP-Laban is composed of members and officials. As a political party, this is a collegial decision. However, the President has made no statement on the subject, indicating whether he supports or opposes this or that president,” Andanar said during a virtual press conference.
Andanar stated that it is “unclear” whether Duterte, as chairman of the PDP-Laban, endorsed Marcos’ presidential bid as well.
He continued by saying that it would be prudent to await Duterte’s formal announcement.
“So, si Pangulong Duterte, hintayin na lang kung ano ang kaniyang personal na desisyon. Again, the PDP-design Laban’s is based on the kanilang napag-usapan sa Partido. It is a malign decision on the part of the Partido, but it is not malign if it is the will of President Duterte. And, once again, the PDP-decision Laban’s is based on the terms of the party’s agreement. It is clear that this is the party’s decision, but it is unclear whether this is also President Duterte’s decision),” Andanar stated.
On Saturday, Andanar stated that Duterte has yet to see a compelling reason to back a presidential candidate.
Ben Evardone, governor of Samar and acting vice president of the PDP-Laban in Visayas, previously expressed support for Vice President Leni Robredo’s presidential bid, citing Duterte’s recent statement that the country’s next president should be “compassionate and decisive” and a “lawyer.”
Only Robredo and Dr. Jose Montemayor are lawyers among the ten presidential candidates.
