NATO leaders will meet to discuss the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
BRUXELLES – The leaders of the 30 member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will meet on Thursday to discuss the situation following Russia’s attack on Ukraine and its long-term strategy in Eastern Europe.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will also attend the NATO Leaders’ Summit, which will take place in Brussels, Belgium, at NATO headquarters.
President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky is expected to deliver a speech via teleconference, requesting a no-fly zone in exchange for NATO air defense systems.
The extraordinary summit meeting’s agenda includes the developments following Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stated in his announcement of the summit, “We will discuss the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, our unwavering support for Ukraine, and the further strengthening of NATO’s deterrence and defense capabilities in light of the new reality in our security.”
NATO began expanding its presence in eastern Europe in November 2021 in response to Russia’s military buildup on the Ukrainian border. These moves have accelerated in the aftermath of Russia’s attack on Ukraine on February 24.
Reinforcements were made, in particular, to multinational combat units in the Baltic states and Poland. Additionally, a large number of warplanes and warships have been dispatched to the region. Troops were also stationed in Romania, where NATO previously lacked a combat unit.
According to information provided by Stoltenberg two weeks ago, NATO’s 130 fighter jets in high readiness, 200 ships ranging from the far north to the Mediterranean, and thousands of additional soldiers are stationed in and near eastern Europe as part of the anti-Russian measures.
NATO had activated the Response Force for the first time in its history in response to Russia’s tensions.
Finally, the NATO Defense Ministers Meeting on March 16 discussed the alliance’s long-term strategy in eastern Europe.
