MRT-3 service interruptions are now a ‘thing of the past,’ according to Duterte.

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo R. Duterte believes that technical glitches are now “a thing of the past” with the reopening of the newly renovated Metro Rail Transit (MRT) 3.

The MRT-3 rehabilitation project, which began in May 2019 and is scheduled to conclude in December 2021, aims to restore the MRT-3 to its original design specifications.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to promote the rehabilitated MRT to commuters and reassure our kababayans (countrymen) that service disruptions are a thing of the past,” Duterte said during the MRT-3 Shaw Boulevard Station rehabilitation completion ceremony in Mandaluyong City.

Duterte stated that the government is committed to completing critical projects such as the MRT-3 rehabilitation despite setbacks caused by Covid-19.

He cited the recently rehabilitated MRT-3 as “proof” that the government is maintaining its momentum in improving connectivity and mobility, which are critical for economic growth and development.

Duterte emphasized the urgency of responding to the daily challenges confronting Filipinos, noting that he is determined to continue championing programs and projects that benefit them.

He declared that he would leave “no room for laxity or complacency” in the public sector.

Duterte also commended the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for delivering on its commitment to improving service delivery, particularly following the completion of the MRT-3’s comprehensive rehabilitation with private partners.

“Without the technical expertise and professional assistance of our service providers, our train system would not have returned to its original hybrid design condition,” he explained.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded the MRT-3 rehabilitation project, which was carried out by its original contractor and maintenance provider, Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

He lauded the MRT-3 upgrades, particularly the trains’ increased speed to 60 kilometers per hour from 25 kilometers per hour previously.

Additionally, the number of trains has increased from 12 to 15 operating units to as many as 18 to 22 operating trains.

Additionally, the time between trains has been reduced from an average of eight to ten minutes to as little as 3.5 minutes.

“I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Japanese government for its assistance with this project. Your country has always been a friend to the Philippines, an active partner in our development endeavors,” Duterte stated.

Meanwhile, Duterte announced that from March 28 to April 30, 2022, the public will receive free MRT-3 rides.

On March 8, women were also offered free rides in honor of National Women’s Day.

Duterte urged the public to use the MRT, Light Rail Transit (LRT), or bus to get around Metro Manila amid inflated oil prices in his prerecorded Talk to the People, which aired on Tuesday.

“You’d better learn from our experience now to ride itong mga (these) MRT, LRT, because that is — that is, the single functional move — to use to transport people from one location to another, or from one point to another,” he said.
