Eleazar commits to providing additional assistance to agricultural students

MANILA, Philippines โ€“ Guillermo Eleazar, a senatorial candidate for the Partido Reporma, pledged Thursday to increase assistance to students pursuing degrees in agriculture and fisheries.

Eleazar stated in a statement that this is to encourage more young people to contribute to the country’s agriculture sector’s growth.

“Kaya maraming kabatataan ang ayaw kumuha ng agriculture-related courses ay dahil over the years, nagkaroon ng pananaw na ang pagiging magsasaka sa ating bansa ay katumbas ng matinding kahirapan,” he added.

He cited the need to concentrate on agriculture due to the fact that the majority of the sector’s workforce is already aging.

According to a study conducted by the University of the Philippines Los Banos and cited by the Department of Agriculture, the average age of farmers in the country is 53, and their children do not typically pursue agriculture-related courses.

The worst part, Eleazar says, is that the majority of farmers cannot afford to send their children to senior high school or college.

Eleazar stated that the additional scholarship slots for agriculture and fisheries-related courses should be given preference to children of farmers and fishermen.

Apart from additional scholarship slots, Eleazar stated that they should receive additional funding for their allowances, practical application of what they learn, training, seminars, and post-graduate scholarships.

As this unfolded, Eleazar conducted a virtual interview with the University of Santo Thomas (UST) community on March 22 in which he revealed the reasons for his Senate candidacy.

Eleazar is one of over 50 UST graduates running for various national and local offices in the May 9 elections. Eleazar studied engineering at UST for one year prior to entering the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) in 1983.

Despite his brief time in the UST, Eleazar stated that its core values of competence, compassion, and commitment helped shape his character during his time in the PMA and later as a police officer.

Eleazar was guided by the same set of values when he decided to run for Senate after nearly four decades in the uniformed service.

Eleazar’s platform is dedicated to enhancing the country’s peace and order situation, including the enhancement of law enforcement agencies’ operational and investigative capabilities.

“I believe that one of the most solid foundations for economic development ay ang (is) peace and security. The most effective crime prevention strategy is the assurance that those who violate the law will be apprehended and punished,” he emphasized.

Apart from that, Eleazar advocates for public health and safety, economic and food security, and youth empowerment.
