The alert level for the Taal Volcano has been upgraded to Level 3.
MANILA, Philippines โ Due to magmatic intrusion in the main crater, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert status of Taal Volcano from Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) to Alert Level 3 (magmatic unrest) on Saturday morning.
The main crater released a short-lived phreatomagmatic burst at around 7:22 a.m., followed by a practically constant phreatomagmatic activity that generated plumes 1500 meters, accompanied by volcanic earthquake and infrasound signals, according to a bulletin issued at 8 a.m.
“Magmatic intrusion is the rise of magma into the volcano’s shallower levels, which can cause further explosions because the magma can explode due to gases inside it or when the magma interacts with groundwater in the volcano’s shallower levels,” Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr. told the Philippine News Agency in a text message.
Residents of Taal Volcano Island, as well as the high-risk towns of Bilibinwang and Banyaga, Agoncillo and Boso-boso, Gulod, and eastern Bugaan East in Laurel, Batangas, should be evacuated owing to the potential of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami if larger eruptions occur.
The entire Taal Volcano Island is in a constant state of danger. Entry to the island, as well as the high-risk Agoncillo and Laurel barangays, must be prevented.
At this time, no activities on Taal Lake should be permitted.
Residents living along the Taal Lake shoreline are being warned to remain watchful, take precautions against possible airborne ash and vog, and calmly prepare for a possible evacuation if the unrest worsens.
Pilots should avoid flying over Taal Volcano Island because airborne ash and ballistic pieces from abrupt explosions and pyroclastic density currents such as base surges may pose a threat to planes.
On Jan. 12, 2020, two months before the Covid-19 pandemic, the volcano erupted, causing severe devastation in various Batangas towns and Tagaytay City. Ashfall was also felt in Metro Manila.
At least five eruptions were observed in July 2021, with one of them boosting the warning level to Level 3.
