POLO-on-wheels is set to make its debut in a Saudi Arabian city.

MANILA, Philippines – The labor department has launched a mobile service in response to the growing needs of migrant Filipino workers in Al Khobar and other areas of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s eastern region.

According to Labor Attaché Hector Cruz Jr. of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) – Al Khobar, the POLO-on-wheels will assist Filipino workers with consular, welfare, and documentation needs.

Cruz added that the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also authorized the POLO to operate a hotel-style shelter on the outskirts of the city for distressed Filipino workers and those awaiting repatriation.

The Labor and Employment Ministry maintains POLO offices in Riyadh and Jeddah.

“We are pleased to report that the ministry has permitted us to operate our POLO-on-wheels and accept public services three times per week. This is fantastic news because it means that our employees will no longer have to travel approximately 430 kilometers to our POLO in Riyadh to receive assistance,” Cruz said in a news release on Sunday.

Cruz stated that the mobile POLO will be launched this week and will include a variety of services such as job transfers, repatriation, and assistance for those experiencing difficulties with their jobs or employers.

“While the government has granted us permission to operate our POLO-on-wheels, it has also established some guidelines that we will strictly adhere to, such as not operating in commercial districts,” DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III said.

According to POLO data, the eastern region of the Kingdom is home to approximately 230,000 Filipinos, including approximately 215,000 documented workers, their dependents, and some migrants.

They work primarily in the oil exploration and drilling industry, but also in service-oriented industries such as cafés and restaurants, as well as in the maintenance services sector.

“Through our POLO-on-wheels project, we will now conduct our outreach program on a regular basis. Our staff will now come to serve and provide the services required by our countrymen,” Cruz explained.
