MANILA, Philippines — Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, a presidential candidate, expressed his support for the international tribunal’s 2016 verdict in favor of the Philippines on major areas of the West Philippine Sea (WPS) claimed by China and other surrounding countries under its “nine-dash” claim.

Pacquiao told reporters at a campaign visit to Quezon City’s Barangay Tatalon that if elected president, he plans to assemble a special panel of experts to work on a “peaceful and dignified resolution of the West Philippine Sea conflict.”

According to Pacquiao, the Chinese claim to Panatag Shoal should be thoroughly examined by experts enlisted by the Philippine government. He expressed his optimism that the Philippines and China will reach a peaceful resolution to their territorial disputes.

“Iyan ang pag-uusapan natin ng matindi, at sinasabi ko bubuo tayo ng peace panel para mag-focus diyan,” Pacquiao added.

The international tribunal in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines in its attempt to invalidate China’s nine-dash claim over broad swaths of the WPS in 2016. Even as China’s Foreign Ministry designated Panatag Shoal, a historic fishing ground for Filipinos, to be their “inherent territory,” the Philippines has publicly denounced intrusions into the area.
