MANILA, Philippines — According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, a magnitude 5 earthquake struck Zambales on Wednesday (Phivolcs).

In a statement posted at 1:39 p.m., Phivolcs stated the tectonic tremor struck 51 kilometers southwest of the municipality of Cabangan at 2:55 a.m.

The quake had a depth of ten kilometers.

Cabangan, Botolan, Palauig, Castillejos, San Felipe, and San Narciso, all in Zambales, were affected by Intensity III. Intensity II, on the other hand, was reported in the Zambales towns of Iba, San Marcelino, and Candelaria.

Instrumental Intensity II was recorded in Zambales’ Olongapo City.

Instrumental intensity is assessed using an intensity meter that detects ground acceleration, whereas reported intensity is based on reports from people who felt the earthquake.

Aftershocks are likely from the magnitude 5 quake, but no damage is expected, according to Phivolcs.

According to Phivolcs’ scale, property damage begins at Intensity VI.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs also registered a magnitude5 aftershock approximately 115 kilometers northwest of Lubang, Occidental Mindoro early Wednesday.

This was an aftershock of the magnitude-6.4 quake that struck Occidental Mindoro last March 14, according to Phivolcs.

There were no reported intensities and no instrumental intensities were recorded. Furthermore, the magnitude 5 quake near Mindoro is not expected to cause aftershocks or damage, according to Phivolcs.
