Gibo Teodoro is a proponent of women’s empowerment in the digital world.
MANILA, Philippines — Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro, a former National Defense Secretary and now a senatorial contender, believes that empowering women in digital technology can help close the economic gap and inequality between men and women.
Teodoro praised the government’s efforts to promote the women’s agenda in the country in a statement released Thursday but added that more needs to be done to maintain achievements in women’s empowerment.
These attempts, according to Teodoro, were hampered by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
He claimed that because many women work in the informal sector, where social security is scarce, the epidemic had a negative influence on women’s lives and livelihoods.
According to the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI), a woman’s income is equal to 37% of what a man earns in comparable employment.
“Women make only 51% of what males make” in terms of wage and non-wage income.
“As we wrap off our National Women’s Month celebrations, we should pledge to continue to work for programs and policies that give equitable opportunity for all genders,” Teodoro said.
He believes that one area where the government might focus is on encouraging women to take advantage of digital technology opportunities.
“By giving them with capacity building trainings in adopting and accessing new technologies, which will increase women’s digital capability for career and business opportunities,” Teodoro stated.
These abilities, he noted, are critical for employment chances, particularly during and after a pandemic.
