MANILA — Beginning Friday, the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, also known as Quiapo Church, will restart the traditional “pahalik” for worshippers.

The word, according to parochial vicar Fr. Douglas Badong, exclusively refers to the touching of the image of Black Jesus Christ on the altar of the basilica in Quezon Boulevard, Manila.

“It’s not physically kissing the image; we just call it that since it allows people to touch it.” In an interview, he stated, “We will have ushers there to help them, and we will touch the feet of the Black Nazarene.”

The Quiapo Church leader also encouraged the faithful to properly follow the government’s minimum health procedures.

“They must clean their hands and spray alcohol on them before they can touch the image.” Allowing people to pray at the feet of the Black Nazarene and be literally close to the image,” Badong said.

He stated the “pahalik” began at 4 a.m. and will continue until the church closes.

While there is no limit to the number of individuals who can attend, Badong advised them to line up in a logical manner and maintain a safe physical distance.

“The queue to the altar has moved to the back of Carriedo Street, Evangelista Street.” He went on to say that the former entry on Quezon Boulevard had already been closed.

“Yes, and we would want to remind them to observe the basic norms (of) wearing face mask(s), social separation,” the Quiapo official stated when asked if the resumption of the “pahalik” is in conjunction with the commemoration of Holy Week. If you want to come here, you must be a dedicated devotee.”

Church activities are now permitted at full capacity in Metro Manila, which is now on Alert Level 1.
