To finance transportation initiatives, DOTr is looking to the private sector.

For the development and execution of transportation projects and initiatives, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is looking to the business sector for financial help.

According to DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista, the government could enlist private sector support because there aren’t enough public funds to fund these projects.

At the Makati Business Club (MBC) discussion dubbed “F2F with Cab Sec’s session” on Wednesday, Bautista said: “There are many government projects that need the private sector’s support because the government has limited funds.”

He suggested high-profile transportation initiatives that may be accomplished through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in the rail, aviation, and road sectors.

He mentioned the planned privatization of the EDSA Busway and the development of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Cebu and Davao as potential PPP initiatives.

Bautista remarked, “We request the business sector to support the privatization of the EDSA Busway.
The renovation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, as well as the addition of other airports in the greater capital for potential PPP proponents, such as those in Clark, Bulacan, and Sangley in Cavite, are among the DOTr aviation projects now in the works, according to Bautista.

To meet Luzon’s aviation needs, “we need more airports,” he declared.

The North-South Commuter Railway, Metro Manila Subway Project, MRT-7, LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project, and South Long Haul Project, according to the transport chief, will all benefit greatly from the PPP.

Bautista also offered his thoughts and experiences from his time serving as a public servant during the discussion.

“When you work for the government, you must put in almost 24 hours each week in addition to the standard 20. There will always be supporters and opponents, but in the end, what matters is that you gave it your all and carried out your professional duties with honesty and integrity, for which you should be proud, according to Bautista.

By connecting its members with important economic managers from the national government, the MBC is continuing its efforts to further strengthen public and private discourse.
