In preparation for the May 9 polls, the Comelec is looking at ‘provincial centers’ in NorMin.

TAGUM CITY, TAGUM โ€” The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced that “provincial centers” will be set up to deal with technical issues during the May 9 elections.

Comelec-10 Director Francisco Pobe noted on Saturday evening’s podcast of the Cabinet Officers for Regional Development and Security-10 (CORDS-10), that these hubs will allow technical personnel to respond quickly to any problems with the operation of the Vote Counting Machines (VCMs).

He said, “We also built the National Technical Center in provincial hubs, which will manage problems or troubleshoot damaged machines.”

Since March 1, several VCMs have been sent to train instructors who will serve on the Board of Election Inspectors in the next elections, according to Pobe.

This will be Rosemary Gaviola-second Tolentino’s election season as a VCM operator, according to Lumbia Central School in Cagayan de Oro City.

“Nothing significant has changed in the process so far, and it’s nice that we get a refresher on how to operate the equipment,” she said.

Health-related protocols

Wearing face masks and good hand sanitation should be observed during all election-related activities, according to Pobe, as a general guideline matched with the observation of the standard health protocol against coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

“According to the IATF [Inter Agency Task Force], there is no need to seek approval from the Comelec to undertake campaigns in areas classified as Alert Level 1 or 2. They will only need to obtain a permit from the local authority to use the venue “he stated

Candidates in areas with Alert Levels 3 and 4 will, however, need authorization from the Local Campaign Committee Center so that the latter can control the number of people who attend the campaign.

On election day, Kristine Eblacas, a teacher at Cagayan de Oro City’s Upper Carmen Elementary School, stated they were told there would be Isolation Polling Places (IPPs) in every school.

She stated that IPPs are included in the Covid-19 health protocols for the upcoming election.

“If a voter’s temperature is 37.5 (degrees Celsius), he or she can still vote, but they will do it inside the IPPs,” Eblacas explained.
