Roque will fight for nuclear power and natural gas.
MANILA, Philippines — Harry Roque, a UniTeam senatorial candidate, supports nuclear energy to address the country’s growing energy demand but opposes rebuilding the Bataan nuclear power plant (BNPP) since it will endanger people and the environment.
To maintain the country’s energy security, the former presidential spokesman said he would suggest steps emphasizing liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a cleaner alternative to coal and increasing renewables.
Roque, who is from Bataan province, advised the government to reconsider the BNPP’s resurgence.
The facility was erected near two dormant volcanoes, Mount Mariveles and Mount Natib, according to him. It also happens to be close to a major geological fault line.
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte signed Executive Order 164 in February, establishing a national nuclear power program that includes the decommissioned Bataan reactor. The BNNP was built in Morong municipality between 1976 and 1984.
“I have no objections to nuclear power because most industrialized countries rely on it to generate electricity. Unlike traditional sources of energy such as coal, it produces no emissions and is environmentally beneficial “On Monday, he remarked in a press release.
“My main issue is the BNPP’s location. The cost to human life, the environment, and the economy would be catastrophic if these two sleeping volcanoes, such as Mount Pinatubo, erupted unexpectedly,” he continued.
Roque claimed that the people of Bataan have been scared and concerned for a long time and that the government should not invest resources in projects that could hurt the public or the country’s ecology.
“Why do we wish to restart an aging power plant that was built on a seismically active and volcanically active site?” Roque was the one who inquired. “Why don’t we build a more technologically advanced plant somewhere safer and depend more on common sense?”
Rehabilitating the BNPP, which produces only 600 megawatts of energy, may be too costly for the government in the long term, according to the former party-list delegate.
Meanwhile, Roque claims that because coal is now five times more expensive than LNG, the latter is a more viable and environmentally good option.
“Through mega typhoons Yolanda and Odette, the country has seen and felt the effects of climate change,’ Roque added. “These harsh weather conditions have been induced by fuel pollution, notably from filthy energy sources.”
“Coal is out, period,” Roque stated emphatically. “Because we already have it at the Malampaya Project in Palawan, I’m a big supporter of liquefied natural gas. On the island of Mindoro, there is continuous onshore exploration.”
Malampaya has given USD12 billion to the local economy since 2002 while meeting 20% of the country’s energy consumption.
Roque emphasized that the country’s energy mix must be balanced.
He promised to provide the renewable energy sector legal support by bolstering energy baseload capacity to fulfill consumer energy demands.
