Eleazar’s senatorial campaign has the support of three major transportation organizations.
MANILA, Philippines โ On Tuesday, three major public transportation organizations in the Philippines voiced their support for former Philippine National Police (PNP) commander Guillermo Eleazar’s senatorial campaign.
The Pangkahalatang Sanggunian Manila at Suburbs Drivers Association (Pasang-Masda), the Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (ALTODAP), and the Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations (ACTO) all pledged to support Eleazar’s candidacy on behalf of their over half-a-million officers and members in a joint statement.
“Over the years, the Pangkahalatang Sanggunian Manila at Suburbs Drivers Association (Pasang-Masda), the Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Associations of the Philippines (ALTODAP), and the Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations (ACTO) have always been united in voicing concerns and fighting for the rights and welfare of all drivers and operators of public utility vehicles across the country.” “We plan to maintain our unity and demonstrate our strength in the next May 9, 2022 elections,” the three transportation organizations stated.
Altodap has 450,000 members, whereas Pasang-Masda has roughly 120,000.
Eleazar was praised by the groups as “tough but fair,” “approachable but solid in his concept of fighting for what is good and right, a man of honor and integrity, and a man who believes in collaborative leadership,” and “a man with honor and honesty.”
The groups endorsed Eleazar’s candidacy because of his tough stance against “kotong cops” and his efforts to resolve the transportation sector’s concerns in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
When he was still the district director of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) until he became PNP chief, they said Eleazar always made sure that their complaints against erring policemen and traffic enforcers who were engaged in extortion and other illegal activities were not only heard but also promptly addressed.
When he was commander of the government’s Joint Task Force Covid Shield, Eleazar also functioned as the transport groups’ consultant, using his position and reach to push for the introduction of fair lockdown restrictions “so that we can go out and earn a living in the thick of the pandemic.”
In addition, the retired police general has pushed for a fuel subsidy and a temporary suspension of excise tax as stop-gap measures to help the transportation sector weather the effects of the pandemic’s mobility restrictions, which have been exacerbated by a recent series of large-scale oil price hikes.
“We feel that General Eleazar has the qualifications, the track record, and the moral ascendancy to fight for the interests of persons in the public transportation sector,” the groups declared, based on their consultations and analyses of the candidates for the May 9, 2022 elections.
Eleazar, on his part, commended Pasang-Masda, ALTODAP, and ACTO for trusting in his abilities to serve the public by enacting laws that address everyday difficulties faced by ordinary Filipinos, such as public transportation drivers and operators.
