There will be no PH-China spat, and the sea row will be resolved: PRRD

MANILA, Philippines β€” Despite the Philippines’ long-running maritime disputes with China, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte reiterated the two countries’ cordial relations on Tuesday, emphasizing that unresolved maritime claims might be handled through diplomatic dialogue.

The remarks were made as Duterte hailed China for being a “partner” in the Philippines’ ambitious “Build, Build, Build” infrastructure initiative.

Duterte acknowledged China’s backing for his infrastructure projects but claimed there is no gap between Manila and Beijing.

During the inauguration of the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge in Intramuros, Manila, which was also attended by Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian, Duterte said, “I also thank and with gratitude the People’s Republic of China for the confidence and for being a partner in enhancing key infrastructure projects in our country.”

“Ambassador Huang, the Philippines, and China, we have no quarrel,” Duterte said, addressing the Chinese diplomat.

Duterte also stated that the Philippines and China can discuss their territorial disputes as well as Filipino fishing rights in disputed waters.

“We may talk about the Spratly Islands and, most likely, my countrymen’s fishing rights, plain conversation, nothing else.” Our people will be able to benefit from economic growth and increased productivity as a result of this,” he said.

China’s vast maritime claims in the hotly contested South China Sea, as well as reported incursions into Philippine waters, prompted Duterte’s statement.

After a People’s Liberation Army – Navy vessel was detected in “illegal intrusions” into the Sulu Sea in January and February this year, the Department of Foreign Affairs summoned Huang on March 14.

On April 8, Duterte will have a virtual meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In light of a probable spillover of the crisis between Russia and Ukraine to Asia, particularly the Philippines and China, Xi wanted a meeting with Duterte.

The subjects that Duterte would discuss with Xi, on the other hand, were unknown to Malacanang.
