MANILA, Philippines — After the Commission on Elections (Comelec) stated on Wednesday that the board had been spared from the cash disbursement embargo owing to the May elections, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) would begin gasoline subsidy distribution.

“They could start (the fuel subsidy program) right away, but they’ll have to wait for our decision.” The announcement is not the same as the decision. They must wait for our resolution, which will include the criteria,” Comelec Commissioner George Garcia stated in a press conference.

The poll body is anticipated to disclose the resolution on Thursday or Friday, according to Garcia.

“At the very least, this serves as notice to the LTFRB and the various agencies that they can now draft a strategy for effectively implementing the gasoline subsidy, including a list of recipients,” he said.

Garcia stated that the fuel subsidy program is supported by them.

“We will, without a doubt, issue a resolution embodying the command.” We are aware that Filipinos are anticipating this. The Comelec is not a commission that will stop a good project like this from happening, but we do want to make sure it is done correctly,” he added.

The LTFRB had already paused the implementation of its fuel subsidy scheme after the poll authority imposed a spending embargo on March 25 that would extend until May 8.

In the face of rising fuel prices, the government has set aside PHP2.5 billion for a fuel subsidy that will assist 377,000 public utility vehicle (PUV) operators and drivers.
