MANILA, Philippines — In preparation for Holy Week, a representative of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) exhorted the faithful to share their blessings and aid those in need, particularly the poor.

In an interview with Church-run Radio Veritas, CBCP president and Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David stressed that the most important penance for the annual observance is kindness toward the poor.

He also stated that the church discourages physical sacrifices such as self-flagellation and crucifixion.

Meanwhile, David urged the faithful to follow all safety and health regulations throughout Holy Week festivities.

“We know the pandemic is receding,” the Catholic prelate stated. “However, we must not let our guards down; we must continue to follow the health regulations so that we can truly conquer this pandemic together.”

“Let’s keep using face masks and maintaining physical separation,” he continued.

The Department of Health had previously urged the Catholic Church and the general public to avoid certain activities during Holy Week that could spread the coronavirus and other infections across the country.

The crucifixion and kissing of saints are two examples.

From Palm Sunday, April 10 to Easter Sunday, April 17, Catholics around the world will observe Holy Week.

The annual commemoration honors Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, death, and resurrection.
