International monitoring teams are critical to Mindanao’s peacekeeping gains.

MANILA – The Office of the Presidential Adviser for Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) credited the International Monitoring Team (IMT) with helping the Bangsamoro peace process maintain its accomplishments.

The official tour of duty in the southern Philippines for the IMT-Mindanao 16 (Malaysia) and 17 (Brunei) will finish in June, according to OPAPRU.

The IMT was established in October 2004 to oversee the execution of the ceasefire agreement between the Philippines’ government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front on the ground (MILF).

Its responsibilities include monitoring the agreement’s security, humanitarian, rehabilitation and development, socioeconomic assistance, and civilian protection aspects.

The IMT’s neutrality as a third-party monitoring team is critical to building and consolidating the Bangsamoro peace process’s accomplishments over time, according to an OPAPRU statement released on Friday.

Butch Malang, co-chair of the GPH-MILF Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities, said, “The IMT has become the government’s effective partner for pushing peace efforts and resolving various ceasefire-related issues in Mindanao, particularly in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).”

On Wednesday, OPAPRU presented certificates of gratitude to the IMT representatives, including M-16’s commander of the mission, Maj. Gen. Datuk Hamdan Bin Hj Ismael.

“In Shaa Allah, the Malaysian Contingent of IMT M-16 and the Bruneian Contingent of IMT M-17 will leave this magnificent Mindanao in a few weeks. We’ve been watching and monitoring the peace situation in the IMT AOR, particularly in the BARMM region. During the ceremony, Ismael added, “Your continued support and cooperation are deeply appreciated.”

The IMT also helps compile all signed agreements between the GPH and MILF Implementing Panels from August 2016 to the present.

In Cotabato City, Iligan City, and Zamboanga City, three IMT teams are stationed.
